Many charity events are planned at The Rally™, providing RVers a chance to interact with and support the host community through gardening, pet adoptions, and kids' camps.
Charity may begin at home, but it's also being given a prominent place at The Rally™, formerly known as The Great North American RV Rally. The Rally's sponsors are offering the RV community three ways to give back to the greater community of Albuquerque and area, which is hosting the event. Rio Grande Community Farm, AlbuquerqueThe Rally's hosts will support the Rio Grande Community Farm in Albuquerque with a day of volunteer work planned for April 15. 2009. Participants will be able to plant, weed, water, and try other gardening activities. A special program will be provided for children, though they can join in the gardening too. The RGCF is a non-profit group offering community-based agricultural programs in conjunction with the City of Albuquerque. The site is Los Poblanos Fields -138 acres of historic farmland located in Albuquerque’s North Valley. The farm distributes produce to city schools and local organizations, and also acts as a natural wildlife feeding area. Sounds like a terrific activity for urban kids who think carrots come in a plastic bag from the supermarket! Pet Adoptions, Courtesy of Albuquerque Mayor Martin ChavezOn April 18 and 19, 2009, The Rally will host pet adoptions sponsored by Albuquerque's Mayor, Martin Chavez. For a modest fee, RV visitors can adopt a dog or cat. The fee includes all of the following:
The rabies vaccination certificate should be sufficient to bring the animal across the border into Canada, but Canadians are advised to check the CFIA guidelines. Association of Hole in the Wall CampsRally organizers have also announced that activities are planned to raise funds for The Rally's official charity, the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps. Founded in 1998 by actor Paul Newman, the Association is "The world’s largest family of camps for children with serious medical conditions." According to their web site, the organization "offers campers the chance to restore hope and recapture their childhood through therapeutic recreation, intentional programming and year-round support that provides encouragement, motivation and confidence." The group, named for the gang in the Newman movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, has a dozen camps in the USA and Europe. Rally Volunteer OpportunitiesBy providing opportunities to bring fresh food to the needy, adopt homeless dogs and cats, and help children with serious illness, The Rally offers volunteer activities that should touch almost anyone's heart.
